At the new MATCH downtown, you can find an amazing compilation of small theaters and art galleries. They have all come together at a place with great parking, box office, cafe (wine, stat!), restrooms and beautiful modern architecture.
One of the gems at this amazing spot is 10-year running Lone Star Lyric. Long forgotten, there is something to be said to tiny performance spaces, amphitheater-style seating and the absence of an actual stage.
All of the front-row seats are organized into sets of 2, with pedestal tables in between to encourage imbibing with friends. The 2 or 3 instruments (typically a piano, drum set and bass) sit at the same floor level as the front row, setting you up for a “classic” chamber-style show. But don’t pigeon-hole this group just yet. Their music is anything but classical. There is an entire repertoire of shows, performed bi-monthly, and featured Saturday Series.
This month, they are featuring a modern take on all of the Gershwin we remember, “From SUMMERTIME to FOGGY DAY, from THEY ALL LAUGHED to BUT NOT FOR ME… set sail on a BOAT THAT’S LEAVING SOON FOR NEW YORK until SOMEONE WATCHES OVER ME! Always know that OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY.”
The entire show is performed by Rob Hunt (piano) and his Swing Trio, with singers Andrew Briggs, Sarah Brindley, and Hal Spencer.
